Public mosaics

There are many mosaics in South London viewable to the public, stretching from Kingston to Greenwich and every where in between.

We will be posting a mosaic map soon. In the meantime, if you know of a public mosaic, be that in a community location, shop, church or otherwise, please email us via the contact page and we will make sure it is included.

Gary Drostle's award winning Fishpond mosaic is in the business district of Croydon.

BAMM South London Mosaics Tours

Saturday 26th September

Members meet Janine at 10.30am at the Garden Museum where she works and then start the tour of Southbank mosaics with David Tootill director of ‘Southbank Mosaics’. St Mary’s Garden fountain will be the first mosaic to look at. David hopes to include Salamanca Street (15 mosaics), Black Prince Rd (12 mosaics), Carlisle Lane (7 mosaics), Centaur St (28 mosaics) and Archbishops Park (12 mosaics) on his tour. He will finish at his studio with a look at some current projects at about 1pm. Southbank Mosaics are based in the crypt of St John’s Church which is close to Waterloo Station. David has to leave at 1pm.

There are places in an around Waterloo station or the Southbank e.g. Royal Festival Hall for lunch. Members can take a look at St Johns Sculpture Garden (4 seats, 10 sculptures – the garden around the church where the studio is based) and signage outside Waterloo station (two mosaic signs and two Blake mosaics) on their way to lunch. There are also two mosaic signs on the South Bank and a Tree of Life in Hopton Alms Houses, Hopton Street and a recent one on Chandler Hall, Lambeth Walk.

The options for the afternoon could include a visit to the group exhibition Nature in Pieces in East Dulwich at the Jeannie Avent Gallery with tea in the Blue Mountain Cafe and/or Janine’s Open Studio at Lewisham Arthouse (where there are about 40 artists). Alternatively these can be visited on Sunday. The group exhibition closes at 5pm and the Open Studios at 6pm.

Sunday 27th September

On Sunday meet at the Blue Mountain Café in North Cross Road, East Dulwich for coffee at 10am. We then walk to the London Wildlife Trust’s Centre for Wildlife Gardening where we can see a few more of Steve Wright’s mosaics. The walk continues to Bellenden Road which has bollards designed by local international artist Anthony Gormley. Mosaics include two designed by local artist Tom Philips and executed by are very own Gary Drostle, also a pavement pebble mosaic of a Komodo dragon by BAMM South London member and exhibitor Jane Higginbottom.

Members can then get a bus or drive up Lordship Lane to the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill for lunch in the café and to see the mosaic mural on the side of the museum. It was designed by Robert Anning Bell (he also designed mosaics for Westminster Cathedral) and constructed by a team of women some time between 1889 and 1901. It is 10 feet high and 32 feet long and is classical in subject matter.

After lunch there will be some time to look around the museum’s collections and gardens before heading back to North Cross Road to see the group exhibition in the Jeannie Avent Gallery and meet the artists/makers from 3pm to 5pm for the end of show drinks and nibbles! The exhibition closes at 5pm on Sunday 27th. Lewisham Arthouse Open Studio weekend closes at 6pm.
